Brightly coloured birds in the sumac drew my attention. These were the males. The females are more subdued in colour but more elegant. You have to look harder to see them and when they are by themselves they are harder to identify. Fortunately this one was in a large flock of both male and female Evening Grosbeaks.
This was the view outside my dining room window at the the cottage a few weeks ago.
I love it when the trees have started to change colours but there is still some green. This year some of the sumac was brilliant red while other trees nearby had barely started to change. The trees I painted in the watercolour started to turn well after many of the other sumac in the area.
The leaves have all gone now. Even the poplars which turn late lost all their leaves in the wind we had Thursday night.
